The Clar Hope Foundation, founded by former First Lady Clar Marie Weah, on Wednesday strongly rejected allegations from Liberia’s Asset Recovery Team that government funds were used to acquire and develop the Marshall complex, calling the inquiry “politically motivated” and “deeply troubling.”
In statement, the foundation said its operations have been conducted with “absolute integrity, professionalism, and strict adherence to the law” and described the Asset Recovery Team’s move as an attempt to malign Mrs. Weah’s reputation and discredit an organization devoted to serving Liberia’s most vulnerable.
“It is disheartening that my genuine commitment and investment in Liberia’s children and vulnerable communities are now being clouded by false claims,” Mrs. Weah said in the statement issued Wednesday.
The foundation said investigators are seeking evidence “for acts that never occurred” and characterized the allegations as baseless insinuations that undermine years of humanitarian service.
Established to provide support to children, young women and marginalized communities, the Clar Hope Foundation said it has led a range of charitable initiatives aimed at improving opportunity and dignity for disadvantaged Liberians.
The statement also accused political actors of attempting to intimidate the foundation, citing past directives discouraging officials from attending its events and punitive measures against supporters.
Despite its criticism of the probe, the foundation pledged to cooperate with legal requirements and to make relevant documents available to investigators.
“The Clar Hope Foundation stands firm, resolute, and ready to defend its legacy of compassion, service, and integrity,” the statement said.
The Asset Recovery Team announced the investigation in a communication to the foundation, asserting government funds were used in the acquisition and development of the Marshall complex.
