The Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) officially launched “Operation True Guardian” on 23 March to bolster national security and restore public trust.
The operation, which commenced its first phase in Western Liberia, aims to establish a stronger military presence and combat the rising tide of transnational and maritime crimes that have threatened the country’s borders and coastal areas.
The AFL will conduct quarterly patrols, beginning with the counties of Grand Cape Mount, Bomi, and Gbarpolu, the army said in a statement posted on its Facebook account.
These organized summer enforcement efforts are designed to enhance border security, improve maritime surveillance, and deter illegal activities through proactive engagements with local communities and law enforcement, it said.
“Operation True Guardian” will not only see military patrols but also the establishment of Forward Operating Bases in each participating county, facilitating communication and collaboration with local government officials. The AFL aims to address hotspots for illicit activities, which have seen a surge as criminals exploit Liberia’s significantly porous borders for smuggling arms, drugs, and even human trafficking.
Reports from local law enforcement and intelligence sources highlight a troubling increase in cross-border smuggling, which poses serious threats to national security and public safety. Criminal organizations have capitalized on the limited enforcement capabilities in the region, fostering an environment of fear and tension among border communities.
Moreover, the coastal waters of Liberia are facing challenges of their own, with an uptick in maritime crimes, including illegal fishing and piracy. Local fishermen have voiced concerns about encounters with unlicensed fishing vessels, which not only jeopardize their livelihoods but also threaten Liberia’s marine resources. The lack of a consistent military presence has created a vacuum, allowing such illegal activities to flourish.
In light of these challenges, the Honorable Minister of National Defense, along with the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, emphasized the need for comprehensive and coordinated military operations. “We understand that a robust response is essential to not only defend our borders but to also protect the livelihoods of our citizens,” stated the Minister.
The initiative, set to extend to other counties in Liberia in the upcoming months, signals a critical commitment from the AFL to safeguard the nation and foster cooperation with local communities.
As Operation True Guardian unfolds, its success will not only depend on military presence but also on building trust and collaboration with the communities it aims to protect. Liberia stands poised to reclaim its borders and coastal waters, ensuring a more secure environment for all its citizens.
