I bring you the much-anticipated play-by-play commentary of the first leg clash in the African Club Winners’ Cup League—Liberia’s darling club, Invincible Eleven, affectionately known as the Sunshine Yellow Boys, versus the formidable Leze Gle of Benin.

A Tribute to Liberia’s Football Legend George Manneh Weah. This was the game I watched as a natural diehard supporter of Mighty Barrolle FC I was compelled to respect the soccer prowess of this extraordinary icon.

Take your seat, tune your radio, and follow the rhythm of the match as it unfolds—kick by kick, roar by roar, moment by moment.

Live from the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Stadium in Paynesville, this is ELBC Radio’s outside broadcast team bringing you the pulse-pounding first leg of the Cup Winners Cup clash between Liberia’s beloved Invincible Eleven and the fiery Dragons de l’Ouémé of Benin!

The Yellow Boys of IE are lined up and ready to shine: Wreh Brapoh stands tall between the post. The defensive wall features Oury Bah, Simeon Mattar, and Moucta Silla. In midfield, it’s Kai Jarbo, Andrew “Bus Stop” Hooper, and Joe Armstrong Nagbe. And up front—oh, what a trio!—Ezekiel “Zico” Doe, Johnathan “Boye Charles” Sogbie, Ben Morty, and the wizard himself, George Oppong Weah.

And we’re off!

Leze Gle takes early possession. Number 10 threads it to number 11 on the far left flank—he’s trying to dance past Mattar, but no way! Simeon Mattar shuts the door and calmly relays it to Brapoh. The keeper launches a missile into the center circle—Boye Charles rises like a phoenix and nods it to Oppong Weah. The Wizard Dribbler is on the move!

He skips past one, glides into the 18-yard box, rounds two defenders like they’re training cones—he’s one-on-one with the keeper… this could be it… AND IT IS! GOOOOAAAALLLLL! GEORGE OPPONG WEAH with the curtain raiser in the 10th minute! What a solo masterpiece!

The stadium erupts! Flags waving, horns blaring—IE officials Lawrence Doe, Archibald Bernard, Sam Burnett, and former Grand Bassa Superintendent John Y Krekru are on their feet. And look who’s arrived—Vice President Dr. Harry Moniba, just in time to witness the magic!

The ball is centered again. Foul on the visitors—free kick to IE. Ben Morty steps up, sends a long one—but it sails over Nagbe’s head. Throw-in to Leze Gle. Their number 9 hurls it forward, but it’s swallowed by their keeper. The Yellow Boys regroup and press again.

The keeper finds number 10, who slips past Mattar—but Andrew “Bus Stop” Hooper says not today! He wins it, scans the pitch, and finds Silla. Silla to Morty, Morty to Weah—he’s triple-marked! Back to Morty, Morty to Boye Charles—but intercepted! Number 5 tries to build, connects with 11—but Joe Nagbe pounces, breaks through, and feeds Weah again!

Oppong Weah is through! He’s broken the wall of Jericho once more—he shoots… GOOOOAAAALLLLL! That’s number two for IE! Bowen Swen is blowing the famous cow horn at Gate 17 like it’s Judgment Day!

Restart. Boye Charles with the ball—he beats one, finds Morty. Morty to Zico Doe, Doe sprints down the right and lays it off to Bus Stop. Bus Stop to Bah, Bah to Mattar, Mattar to Nagbe, Nagbe to Morty—Morty slips through and fires… GOOOOAAAALLLLL! That’s number three! IE are on a rampage! Leze Gle are being dazed, confused, and trailing 3–0 as we hit halftime.

Second half underway. IE now attacking toward the ELBC end, Dragons toward ELWA. The visitors make changes, desperate to claw back. Number 6 controls, finds his man on the left—he whips it to number 10 who bulldozes through IE’s defense and slams it home. Goal for Leze Gle! They’ve pulled one back.

But they’ll need three unanswered goals in Contonou to eliminate IE. Time ticking—nearly 90 minutes gone.

IE on the counter! Nagbe dances past one, finds Boye Charles. Charles to Hooper, Hooper to Morty—Morty surges forward, Oppong Weah is ghosting in! Morty sends a curling in-swinger… Oppong leaps like a gazelle… HEADS IT HOME! GOOOOAAAALLLLLLLLLLL! That’s a hat trick for George Oppong Weah! The stadium is shaking! The scoreboard reads: Invincible Eleven 4, Leze Gle 1.

What a night in Paynesville! The Yellow Boys have lit up the SKD, and the road to Contonou just got steeper for the visitors.

‘My darling IE oh, IE play more soccer yeah, Liberia’s Darling Club aye yah…

Disclaimer: This writeup does not represent ELBC at the time. Its name is only mentioned because of its history in broadcasting live games before 1985 and after 1985 when ELWA decided to stay out of football commentary.

Also note the information in the commentary may not be fully accurate. What is important is how IE won the game during the first leg but got eliminated with a score of 3-0 in Benin two weeks after. This is about how our teams used to mesmerize football lovers back in the days of old.
