Liberia National Police have declared economist and political commentator Samuel Jackson a suspect in the death of his South African wife, identified in reports as Toni Khumalo (also referred to as Toni Jackson), as investigators continue forensic work at the couple’s Sinkor home.
Toni was reported dead on Friday, March 13. Police were dispatched to the Jackson residence hours later. Inspector General Gregory Coleman said officers initially treated Samuel Jackson as a person of interest; after questioning and additional enquiries the police formally declared him a suspect and detained him along with several relatives and household staff.
Jackson, 73, voluntarily turned himself in to police and has repeatedly denied wrongdoing. He told reporters he found his wife “semi unconscious” in their bedroom after returning from a talk show and that she was rushed to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, where she underwent brain surgery and later died. Jackson said his wife had a history of seizures.
A seizure is a sudden, uncontrolled surge of electrical activity in the brain that temporarily disrupts normal brain function. It can cause behavioral changes, involuntary movements, altered sensations, or loss of consciousness. Seizures are events, often caused by head injury, infection, or epilepsy, rather than a disease itself.
Jackson, 73, is stern critic of the current ruling Unity Party administration and was a member of the 1980 military junta that dismantled the century long True Whig party oligarchy. He would later fallout with the Junta and return to the United States where he remains until reconnecting with the Charles Taylor regime in 2000s.
He routinely posted photos and videos of himself and wife on Facebook, displaying affection. Zulu Queen, as he called his south African wife, was believed to be in her late 40s and several years younger than Jackson.
As some administration officials and supporters hold Jackson blameworthy for his wife passing, linking it to domestic violence, he took to Facebook in his own defense.
“I Have overwhelming evidence from Liberia and around the world to disprove the malicious slants against me,” he said.
“I took my wife in my private car at 10:20 on Thursday. Only from Catholic Hospital I needed ambulance fitted with oxygen in the afternoon.
“Calling me a wife beater is insane. Go and ask my ex-wives. I never touched them”
Police have said lacerations on Toni’s body “appear to be domestic violence related,” according to a police spokesman.
Investigators returned to the Old Road, Sinkor, residence on Sunday to reconstruct the scene and collect specimens and other evidence.
The house and its immediate surroundings have been declared a restricted area while forensic teams process material from the property.
Authorities say several members of the household — reported by family sources to include a driver, a chef and security personnel — are being treated as persons of interest and remain in custody during the early phase of the probe.
Under Liberian law, the police have 48 hours to charge a suspect and forward the case to court or release them.
On March 16 police scheduled an autopsy on Toni’s remains. Jackson’s lawyers raised objections to the procedure, citing late notice, questions about the pathologist’s credentials, the absence of a death certificate establishing cause of death and lack of opportunity to have an independent pathologist.

- Isaac Jackson, Jr Urges Calm and Objective Police Investigation
We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dearly beloved sister-in-law, Mrs. Toni Jackson, our Zulu Queen.
Toni was a sweet and accomplished young professional—caring, compassionate, and generous in love. Uncle Sam loved Toni deeply, and she loved him in return, forming a marital bond that many admired for its strength and devotion.
In the wake of her tragic passing and the many emotions surrounding it, we wish to state clearly that we stand in solidarity, sorrow, and sympathy with all victims of domestic abuse, including girls and boys who suffer the terrible crimes of rape and sodomy. Violence and abuse in any form are deeply troubling, and our hearts go out to all who have endured such pain.
Our thoughts, prayers, and sincere sympathies are with Toni’s family, friends, and all who are grieving this profound loss.
Since Toni’s passing, a number of social media influencers—including some who are close to Uncle Sam—have publicly raised accusations against him. We are concerned by these allegations and the distress they have caused. At the same time, we believe it is important that the truth be established through proper and credible processes.
Therefore, we respectfully call on the public and all those touched by this sad event to remain calm and measured, allowing verified evidence and the appropriate authorities to determine the course of action.
As we mourn during this time of sorrow, we encourage everyone to show compassion and respect toward the bereaved family.
We also kindly urge the public to refrain from sharing sensitive or graphic content related to this matter, as such actions may cause further pain to the family and could potentially prejudice or jeopardize the ongoing police investigation.
May Toni’s memory be honored with dignity, and may her loved ones find comfort, strength, and peace during
STAND Calls for Credible, Independent Investigation into Emerging Concerns Surrounding the Death of Sam Jackson’s Wife
The Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND) expresses deep disturbance over emerging details surrounding the death of the wife of Liberian economist, Samuel P. Jackson. What was initially received by the public as a tragic loss that inspired widespread sympathy has, in light of recent developments, raised serious questions that warrant careful and responsible attention. STAND extends its sincere condolences to Mr. Jackson and all members of the grieving family during this profoundly difficult time.
While the passing of any individual is a deeply painful matter, preliminary information released by law enforcement authorities, along with disturbing images circulating publicly, appear to suggest the possibility of violence against the deceased. The graphic nature of some of these materials has understandably heightened public concern. At the same time, STAND emphasizes that the dignity, sanctity, and privacy of the deceased and her family must be respected at all times, and that such sensitive matters must be handled with the utmost care and responsibility.
Allegations or indications of violence against any person must be treated with the highest level of seriousness. In a democratic society governed by the rule of law, questions of this nature must be addressed through a professional, evidence-based process that protects both the pursuit of justice and the rights of all individuals involved. It is essential that the investigation be guided by the principles of due process, ensuring that facts are established through credible methods and that any determination of responsibility is made through lawful and impartial procedures.
STAND emphasizes that the deceased is reportedly a foreign national from South Africa, a detail that heightens the responsibility of the Liberian state to conduct the investigation with the highest standards of professionalism, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law.
STAND has always demanded these standards. The handling of such cases carries serious implications not only for public confidence within Liberia but also for the country’s international reputation as a nation committed to protecting human life and upholding justice for both citizens and foreign nationals.
In this sensitive context, Liberians are urged to exercise restraint and refrain from politicizing the tragedy. Speculation or inflammatory commentary, particularly on social media, risks undermining the integrity of the investigative process and could inflame tensions or expose Liberians abroad to hostility. Respect for due process is essential to ensure that any outcome is credible, impartial, and accepted both domestically and internationally, making responsible and measured public conduct imperative.
In view of these concerns, STAND calls for a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation conducted in accordance with the rule of law. Such an inquiry must be evidence-driven, professionally managed, and subject to appropriate oversight to ensure credibility and public trust. Only a process that is demonstrably impartial and grounded in established legal standards can provide clarity to the public while safeguarding the rights of all parties.
STAND reaffirms its unwavering commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of human dignity. The loss of life—under any circumstance—demands seriousness, integrity, and responsible action from the institutions entrusted with upholding the law. A credible and transparent investigation is essential not only to establish the truth but also to reinforce Liberia’s commitment to justice and respect for human life.
