The Forestry Development Authority (FDA) Region 4 has incinerated more than LD$140,000 worth of bush meat from protected animal species, sending a fiery warning to poachers and traffickers across Liberia.
The seizure was made during a routine inspection at the Kanneh Road Check Point on Monday, May 25, 2026, where FDA inspectors intercepted the illicit cargo. Authorities say the crackdown is part of intensified efforts to safeguard endangered wildlife and dismantle the illegal trade that continues to undermine Liberia’s biodiversity.
Witnesses watched as FDA officers piled the confiscated bush meat and set it ablaze, flames consuming the evidence in line with strict wildlife protection regulations. Officials stressed that the destruction was not only symbolic but necessary to reinforce environmental safety measures and deter future violations.
The alleged owner of the bush meat was promptly arrested by the Liberia National Police. Following swift prosecution, the suspect was fined US$100, which was paid into government revenue. While critics argue the penalty is too lenient compared to the scale of the crime, conservationists insist the public spectacle of the burning carries a powerful deterrent effect.
“Illegal hunting is a direct assault on our national heritage,” declared one FDA officer. “Every animal killed illegally is a blow to our ecosystem, our tourism potential, and the survival of future generations.”
Environmental experts warn that poaching and trafficking of protected species remain rampant in several regions, threatening conservation gains and destabilizing fragile ecosystems. Community leaders, however, have applauded the FDA’s decisive action, urging residents to join the fight by reporting illegal activities.
Advocates emphasize that protecting wildlife is not just about preserving nature—it is about securing livelihoods, promoting tourism, and ensuring ecological balance. The FDA has vowed to intensify patrols and inspections, promising that violators will face the full weight of the law.
