Abdullah Kamara, the suspended Chairman of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), emerged triumphant On August 1, with a ruling from Criminal Court ‘C’ declaring him not guilty of corruption charges. In a compelling address following the outcome, Kamara framed his victory not merely as a personal success, but as a pivotal moment for justice, truth, and accountability in Liberia’s public sector.
“This is not just a personal victory; it is a powerful reminder to all Liberians that truth, patience, and respect for the rule of law can withstand even the strongest storms,” Kamara said. “From the very beginning, I chose not to hide or evade justice. Today, I am vindicated.”
Expressing gratitude to President Joseph Boakai for his principled decision to suspend him during the investigation, Kamara viewed this period as an opportunity to clear his name without the distractions of his official duties. “I hold absolutely no bitterness toward that decision. On the contrary, I welcomed it as a chance to prove the integrity with which I have always served Liberia,” he affirmed.
The road to his vindication was fraught with personal and professional challenges, including reputational damage and financial losses, particularly impacting his private vocational school, the largest in Liberia. This experience, he claimed, illuminated the detrimental effects of unverified allegations perpetuated through social media.
“In today’s digital age, public perception can shape or destroy in an instant,” Kamara cautioned. He urged accountability from the media and the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), emphasizing the necessity for thorough, evidence-based investigations devoid of political bias.
Reflecting on his tenure at the LTA, Kamara highlighted significant achievements that he and his team had made toward revitalizing Liberia’s telecommunications sector. “Before my suspension, we achieved results that had eluded the LTA for more than eight years,” he recounted.
Notable accomplishments included the resolution of long-standing regulatory issues, the initiation of the Liberia Digital Transformation Project, and the launch of the first comprehensive cybersecurity framework, among others.
Kamara emphasized the critical role of technology in advancing various sectors of the economy, asserting, “Liberia cannot afford to be left behind.” He called for the urgency to implement the Liberia Digital Transformation Program, leveraging both experienced leadership and the innovative capabilities of young tech entrepreneurs. His vision for the telecom sector centers on empowering Liberians by creating a framework that promotes national ownership of the digital landscape.
With renewed determination following his legal battle, Kamara is committed to returning to public service, undeterred by past allegations or setbacks. “I am not defined by allegations, titles, or adversity — I am defined by service, innovation, and results,” he proclaimed.
