Liberia: House Passes $738 Million National Budget for 2024 Fiscal Year

The House of Representatives has approved the fiscal year 2024 National Budget amounting to $738,859,827, or its equivalent of LRD140,383,367,130, with eight months remaining in the current financial cycle.

For the first time, the members of the House of Representatives voted by roll call to approve the budget. The passage of the budget followed a rigorous debate on Thursday, April 25, 2024, led by the House’s Committee on Ways, Means, Finance and Budget, chaired by Montserrado County Representative Dixon Seboe.

The debate was preceded by a report from the joint Ways, Means, Finance and Public Accounts committees of the House and the Liberian Senate, respectively.

According to a statement from the House Press Bureau, the budget, initially submitted at $692,408,827, witnessed an increment of $46,451,000. The additional funds were allocated to various sectors, including transparency and accountability, security and rule of law, health, education, and agriculture.

House Speaker, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, commended the line ministries and government agencies for their cooperation and collaboration during the revenue and expenditure hearings, as well as the joint legislative committee for thoroughly scrutinizing the budget.
