Liberia: Senate’s Two-Year Audit Plan Criticized

Must read

Liberia – Integrity Watch-Liberia (IWL), a civil society organization, has expressed concern over the Liberian Senate’s plan to conduct an audit on its activities in two years’ time. IWL’s Executive Director, Herald Aidoo, has described the process as an “invasion” and has called for an immediate audit of the 55th Legislature.

Speaking to Legislative Reporters on the opening day of the Joint Public Account Committee hearing at the Capitol, Aidoo stressed that the need for an audit process for the 55th Legislature is now, and not a planned two-year plan by the Liberian Senate.

“Transparency and accountability should start with the people’s Representatives, the National Legislature,” Aidoo said, adding that an audit of government institutions should begin with the first branch of government, the National Legislature.

Aidoo also highlighted some of the major challenges Liberia is facing, including the enforcement of laws and compliance in ensuring that recommendations are adhered to and people found going against the laws are held accountable.

Despite his criticism of the Senate’s decision, the IWL Boss expressed hope that the opening of the public accounts hearings by the 55th Legislature will mark a new beginning of accountability in Liberia, especially in the National Government.
