FC Fassell forced Al Shorta Sports Club of Iraq to a 1-1 draw at the Jewel Sports Park in Cairo, Egypt on 27 August. Newcomer Mohammed Sharara of Jordan scored his first goal following a skillful pass from Rewan Al-Amin but Musa Jabateh leveled 15 minutes before the break.
Muhammad Dawoud restored Al Shorta advantage when he sped past two opponents before slotting past Gambian goalie Ahmed Tijan Savage.
Ten minutes later, Fassell exchanged passes with captain Zah Kranger firing from inside the penalty box but his shot was spilled over by goalkeeper Mohamed Karim.
Mark ‘Bigmanshot Juwle’ Yallah was in the right place at the right time to slot home the loose ball, making it two goals in two friendlies.
Al Shorta, who are on a pre-season training camp in Egypt like Fassell, were the best for most periods of the match.
They won the 2023/2024 Iraqi Stars League with 87 points from 38 games with 26 wins, nine draws and three defeats.
And head coach Ahmed Salah said they are using the camp to prepare for next season.
“It was a good game that we dominated. I like the tempo and fast breaks. Our opponents played a good game and I think both teams deserve the draw. We are here to prepare for the Asian Champions League and the new season,” said Salah.
Fassell head coach Ivan Minnaert was pleased with the results despite fielding his strongest team with five changes from the first game.
But they lacked the cutting edge provided by midfielder Frederick Dennis, who put in a man of the match performance on trials, against Zanzibar champions Jeshi la Kujenga Uchumi Sports Club at the same venue on 22 August.
“We fielded our strongest team because we wanted to know the difference. I am pleased that we didn’t lose and we scored two goals against a team that was more physical and tactical than the team from Zanzibar,” said Ivan.
He will be pleased to welcome Delton Kollie, Robin Hney, Edwin Diamond Johnson, Josephus Mantor, Josiah Chea, Tonia Tisdell and Titus Yeah to Cairo on Wednesday.
