Liberia: Electricity Regulators Seek New Tariff Proposals from Power Providers

Must read

The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has issued directives to the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) and LIBENERGY Liberia, instructing them to submit proposed tariff applications for various customer categories by October 4, 2024.

The directive is in line with the 2015 Electricity Law of Liberia and the Electricity Tariff Regulations of 2021, which empower the Commission to approve and set electricity tariffs for licensed operators within the Electricity Supply Market of Liberia.

The proposed tariffs, once approved by the Commission, will be implemented during the tariff period beginning January 1, 2025, and ending on December 31, 2027, subject to adjustments as mentioned in the Multi Year Tariff Methodology of 2021, the regulator said in a statement shared with Oracle News Daily Monday.

As part of the tariff review process, the Commission will hold a series of public hearings, stakeholder engagements, outreaches, and conduct talk shows with electricity customers, consumers, policymakers, interest groups, and civil society organizations to gather inputs and recommendations before making the final decisions.

The Commission has also issued a notice of complete application to Jungle Energy Power (JEP) on its tariff application for its licensed distribution service areas in Bong and Nimba counties. JEP has proposed a tariff of 21.5 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for Large Customers and 25 cents per kWh for all other customers in its operation areas.

The Commission has emphasized the importance of adherence to the tariff schedules and timetables issued, warning that failure to do so will lead to significant regulatory penalties under the law, including fines.

The public is encouraged to actively participate in the upcoming stakeholder engagements and public hearings to ensure their voices are heard in the tariff review process.
