The opposition Liberian People’s Democratic Party (LPDP), has written President Joseph Boakai and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, J. Fonati Koffa that the country is tending on a dangerous path which has sparked public concern and national debates.
The communication dated September 27, 2024, under the national chairman, D. Wa Hneh states, since the inauguration of the Unity party led government on January 22, 2024, there have been political and legal issues that are dividing the nation and their dangerous trends have sparked public concerns and debates. Some of these issues have found their way to the Judicial Branch and to the final arbiter of justice in the land, which is the Supreme Court.
The LPDP believes that the three branches have an important place in building the peace and unity of the country. As the LDPD views the direction Liberia is heading, the party has no doubt that the government is reinventing the wheels of the 1980s and 1990s and adopting them into the governance system and public discourses.
LPDP, of Senator Alex Tyler says development of the country rests on the pillars of peace, unity, reconciliation and political stability, rule of law, integrity, transparency, accountability and respect for fundamental and constitutional rights.
“Honorable Speaker, in an effort to avoid a repeat of the catastrophic events we experienced for 14 years, the LPDP has decided to take the approach of constructive engagement to assist in finding solutions to these disintegrating developments by using this medium to propose a national dialogue and reconciliation conference.
“We shall also communicate these concerns and/or proposals to our international partners who fought to ensure that sanity, peace and democracy were restored to Liberians. We think this approach is a great step toward achieving collective development, despite our diverse political agenda and constitutional mandates,” the letter concludes.
