Must read

Commerce and Industry, Commerce and Industry Minister-designate Magdalene Dagoseh outlined a comprehensive plan aimed at stabilizing prices and protecting consumers in Liberia.

Speaking during her confirmation hearing before the Senate, the nominee emphasized the urgent need for regulatory measures to prevent price gouging and ensure the availability of essential commodities.

“Under my watch, the Ministry will closely monitor the prices of vital goods and work with international partners as well as local suppliers to maintain a stable supply chain, preventing shortages that could impact our communities,” Dagoseh stated. She highlighted the enforcement of anti-profiteering laws as a key priority, particularly for essential items like rice, fuel, and building materials.

In addition to price controls, Dagoseh vowed to conduct regular market surveys and assess economic data to implement policies that combat inflation.

She also plans to foster competition by encouraging diversity in trade, reducing reliance on single-source imports, and supporting local producers in meeting export standards to access international markets.

If confirmed, Dagoseh’s initiatives are designed to promote a competitive marketplace, enhancing Liberia’s trade balance and generating foreign exchange while stimulating economic growth.

“We will open up competition among importers to drive down prices and improve the quality of goods,” she explained, underscoring the importance of establishing trade partnerships to elevate Liberian products in foreign markets.

Addressing the issue of institutional capacity, the Minister-designate committed to investing in ongoing training and development programs for ministry staff to enhance their skills, particularly in trade regulation and industrial policy.

She emphasized the need for staff to access the necessary resources and technology to perform their duties effectively.

Dagoseh acknowledged the contributions of former Minister Modad and expressed her intention to build on established plans that align with her vision for the Ministry, committing to review and implement initiatives that present the greatest opportunities for success.
