A serious rift has emerged within the Liberian Senate regarding the submission of the draft 2025 national budget, which was sent directly to rebels lawmakers pushing for the removalĀ Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.
Established laws and practices demands the budget be addressed and submitted to the Speaker. This year President Boakai’s whose party in collaboration with the opposition Congress for Democratic are forcing the Speaker exit, breached the law and submitted the budget to lawmakers who for more than one month have refused to attend session.
President Pro Tempore of the Senate, Madam Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence, along with several senators, urged their colleagues to refrain from engaging with the House Rebels, citing the legality of their action.
They argued that collaborating with the renegade bloc would undermine the rule of law and violate the 1986 Liberian Constitution.
Senator Karnga Lawrence emphasized that such actions would imply the Senate’s endorsement of the majority bloc as the legitimate faction in the House, thereby rendering the Speaker and his leadership ineffective.
In contrast, Senate Chairman on Executive, Senator James P. Biney from Maryland County, and other senators contended that the Senate should work with the majority bloc, as legislative efficacy is fundamentally about numbers rather than positions.
