President Joseph Boakai has announced that 455 students will benefit from the newly launched Presidential Scholarship program in Monrovia. This initiative provides both academic scholarships and financial aid for underprivileged students.

Proposed by Minister Grisgby, the Presidential Scholarship program is designed to support those in need, enabling them to pursue their educational goals and dreams.

In his remarks at the program’s launch, President Boakai emphasized that the initiative aims to help students overcome obstacles and fulfill their aspirations. He acknowledged that many students struggle to achieve their dreams due to financial constraints.

Minister of State for Presidential Affairs Grisgby, who delivered the welcome statement, highlighted the program’s objective to create opportunities for disadvantaged students.

“This country is full of talented students, but many are sidelined due to a lack of financial resources. Through this program, our president seeks to help these students realize their dreams. Although we aim to gradually extend this initiative to all counties, it will take time. We are actively engaging with individuals and organizations for support,” Grisgby stated.

To qualify for the academic scholarship, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5, while those seeking financial assistance are required to achieve and uphold a GPA of 2.5 or higher. The beneficiaries of this scholarship hail from various universities and colleges in Monrovia.

In addition to their studies, participating students will engage in projects focused on “Climate Change and Beach Maintenance.” Their responsibilities will include raising awareness about the impacts of climate change and promoting the health of ocean ecosystems.

Students, along with their mentors, will work to educate beachgoers on responsible behavior, discouraging practices like sand mining and improper waste disposal. Community service will also be a key component of their involvement.

The program has an initial budget of US$150,000, with US$50,000 currently allocated at the ministry. While the scholarship program primarily focuses on academics, it also aims to guide students on their future career paths.

Looking ahead, the program is set to be launched in various counties starting next year, with projects to be identified and implemented by the scholarship recipients.
