The Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas (ULAA) has publicly condemned the violent protests that erupted at the Capitol building in Liberia on December 17-18, describing the images and videos of chaos and destruction as “particularly disturbing.”
The escalation of violence reached a critical point with reports of the Capitol Building engulfed in flames, heightening tensions in an already precarious political climate. ULAA emphasizes the urgent need for restraint from all parties involved and expresses concern over the potential for further lawlessness if these acts are not addressed.
In light of the ongoing turmoil, the ULAA is calling for a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire and the conduct of both law enforcement and protesters. “All perpetrators need to be brought to justice,” stated a ULAA representative. The organization highlights that such violent incidents pose a significant threat to the stability of Liberia, which is already facing numerous challenges.
ULAA also highlighted reports of unlawful arrests and detentions during the protests, urging law enforcement agencies to exercise caution and uphold the rule of law. They are advocating for dialogue over force and are demanding accountability for individuals who incited violence or engaged in unlawful acts.
“As we navigate this critical moment, we urge the government, law enforcement, and citizens to work collaboratively to deescalate tensions. It is essential to protect the sanctity of Liberia’s democratic institutions,” the statement read.
The ULAA’s call for unity extends beyond Liberia’s borders, appealing to the United States government, the African Union, the European Union, ECOWAS, and the United Nations to provide support and denounce lawlessness during these fragile times.
ULAA says it remains committed to promoting justice, peace, and a climate of mutual respect and understanding within Liberia.
