Liberia: European Envoys Tour ArcelorMittal Mines

The Head of the European Union Delegation to Liberia  Nona Deprez, alongside French Ambassador Isabelle Le Guellec, recently toured ArcelorMittal’s operations in Buchanan and Yekepa, signaling the company’s  growing international collaboration and shared commitment to sustainable development in Liberia.

During their visit, the ambassadors engaged with ArcelorMittal’s team and were briefed on significant initiatives, particularly the Phase II Expansion Project, which focuses on major investments in critical infrastructure, including the railway, port, and mining operations.

Ambassador Nona Deprez praised ArcelorMittal’s long-term dedication to Liberia. She stated, “I commend ArcelorMittal’s substantial investments in the railway and concentrator, which will create more jobs and increase domestic revenue for the Liberian people.”

The delegation also toured the ArcelorMittal Liberia Training Academy, where hundreds of young Liberians receive comprehensive vocational education and training to enhance their professional prospects.

French Ambassador Le Guellec expressed admiration for the company’s commitment to the region, noting, “The unwavering engagement of the company since 2005, even during crises like Ebola, and their heavy investments and support for local communities have strongly impressed me.”

Diplomatic Attache Dimitri de Pues from the EU Delegation highlighted the importance of these investments as a means of fostering economic growth and creating job opportunities, which currently support approximately 7,000 staff.

ArcelorMittal’s operations in Liberia are driven by a vision of creating lasting, positive impacts on local communities through sustainable practices.

The company continues to demonstrate its commitment to developing a brighter future for Liberia through infrastructure enhancements and community support initiatives.
