The Ministry of Justice has confirmed that the recent autopsy of 19-year-old Yarkpawolo Moisema, who died under suspicious circumstances in Voinjama City, Lofa County, reveals that the cause of death is unnatural.
This revelation has sparked widespread concern and outrage over police treatment of detainees in Liberia.
The death of Moisema on January 6, 2025, has prompted the Ministry of Justice to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his demise.
The government has vowed to uncover the truth and hold accountable those responsible for any wrongdoing.
In a parallel case that has captured public attention, the Liberia National Police (LNP) is also investigating the death of Nancy Musu Kiatamba, a resident of Vai Town, Old Road Community.
Ms. Kiatamba was arrested on May 9, 2025, following a verbal altercation and, after spending only a few hours in custody, was released the same day. However, she tragically passed away just days later, on May 14, 2025. Her guardian, Moimeh Thomas, has alleged that her death was the result of an assault by an officer involved in her arrest.
The Inspector General of Police has responded swiftly, mandating an administrative investigation led by the Professional Standards Department into the case.
Preliminary findings have already led to Inspector Saywon T. Wulah being recommended for sanctioning pending further investigation. The LNP has also ordered a forensic autopsy to ascertain the exact cause of Ms. Kiatamba’s death, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring due process.
In a press statement released on May 27, 2025, the LNP assured the public that it is dedicated to handling the matter with the utmost seriousness and transparency, stating that the ongoing investigations and the upcoming autopsy results will determine any necessary actions, including possible criminal proceedings.
The incidences surrounding both Moisema and Kiatamba have raised critical questions about the treatment of individuals in police custody in Liberia. With growing fears regarding police conduct, the public is demanding accountability and reform to prevent future tragedies.
The government has reiterated its pledge to uphold human rights and to take every necessary step to address the underlying issues within the police force.
