The Chief Executive Officer of the Liberia Maritime Authority Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe has explained to global actors why Liberia should be seated amongst the industry’s elites during official launch of the country’s campaign for re-election to Category A of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 biennium in London.
Speaking at an event attended by dignitaries including Madame Genevieve Kennedy, Liberia’s Ambassador to the UK, and Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, the Secretary-General of the IMO, Lighe asserted Liberia’s longstanding commitment to maritime safety, sustainability, and innovation.
“It is both an honor and a great privilege to speak before you on this meaningful occasion,” Lighe remarked, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the Liberian team, the ambassadorial staff, and the broader maritime community in reaching this pivotal moment.
For over 70 years, Liberia has been a founding member of the IMO and has established itself as a major player in the global maritime industry. Lighe underscored the significance of the Liberian Shipping Registry, which is currently among the largest in the world and has been an instrumental force in enhancing safety and efficiency in international waters.
“Liberia is once again standing tall, seeking re-election to a seat among the elite of maritime governance,” he declared, emphasizing that this campaign is more than mere politics; it reflects Liberia’s enduring commitment to the principles and mission of the IMO.
The Commissioner appealed for international support and votes, stating, “Re-electing Liberia to Category A means reinforcing a voice that has always spoken for safety, sustainability, and shared growth.” He insisted that a continued Liberian presence would facilitate balanced and inclusive decision-making within the organization.
As the maritime community prepares for the upcoming 34th Regular Assembly Session of the IMO, Lighe reiterated Liberia’s readiness to fulfill its reciprocal commitments to global maritime governance.
He assured attendees that Liberia is dedicated to fostering trust, cooperation, and shared objectives, substantiating its role as a responsible maritime leader.
Lighe invoked the words of ex-United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt: “A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.” He encouraged stakeholders to embrace challenges and work collaboratively towards a safer, more secure, and equitable maritime future.
