Citizens and political groups in Liberia are vocally condemning the recent actions of the Liberia National Police amid growing concerns of an encroaching police state.
Demonstrations erupted following the alleged assault and subsequent arrest of Janga Kowo, the Chairman of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), which activists claim highlights the increasing political repression in the country.
Kowo, was brutally handled by the police Saturday despite being peaceful and showing no form of resistance.
The Student Unification Party (SUP) led the charge in the public outcry, decrying police violence and expressing alarm over what it describes as a regime slipping into “dictatorial authoritarianism.”
In a statement released Monday, SUP Secretary-General Odecious Mulbah called for the immediate dismissal and prosecution of Inspector General Gregory Coleman for allegedly enabling state violence and suppressing political opposition.
“The Boakai administration is weaponizing the state security apparatus to silence dissent,” said SUP Chairman Sylvester Wheeler. “This is a dangerous path that we must not allow our country to tread.”
The police’s response to Kowo’s arrest, which they assert was based on probable cause, has done little to quell public concerns. Although the LNP reports that Kowo was released without charge shortly after his apprehension at police headquarters, the manner of his arrest raised significant alarm. Citizens are questioning the use of force by law enforcement, with many viewing it as a breach of their civil liberties.
In an attempt to address the mounting criticism, the LNP has announced that Inspector General Coleman has directed the Professional Standards Division to conduct a thorough review of the incident. The police have committed to examining video evidence and will make their findings public once the inquiry is complete.
“As we continue to uphold law and order, we remind all citizens of their responsibility to abide by the law,” the LNP stated in an official release. They emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and public safety while urging citizens to seek accurate information rather than contribute to the ongoing panic.
However, the assurances from the police have done little to assuage the fears of a populace increasingly disillusioned with what they perceive as a disregard for democratic norms and individual rights.
The situation continues to escalate as more citizens unite in solidarity, demanding accountability and pushing back against what they see as the dangerous militarization of state power.
