Demonstrating its continued commitment to education and technical capacity-building in Liberia, ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) has donated US$50,000 to Nimba University.
The contribution forms part of AML’s annual obligation under its Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) with the Government of Liberia and is targeted specifically at strengthening the university’s Mining Engineering and Geology programs.
The symbolic handover of the check took place on Thursday, with Joseph Sloan, Coordinator of the Team Support Unit within AML’s Sustainability and External Relations Department, presenting the donation to Assistant Professor Emmanuel A. Donseah, Dean of the College of Engineering and Geoscience.
Speaking at the ceremony, Sloan reaffirmed AML’s strategic investment in higher education, particularly in disciplines critical to the mining sector.
“This contribution underscores ArcelorMittal Liberia’s commitment to developing a skilled workforce that can drive Liberia’s extractive industries forward. Supporting institutions like Nimba University ensures that students are equipped with the tools and training necessary to succeed in the mining and geosciences fields,” he said.
Receiving the donation, Dean Donseah expressed the university’s gratitude, noting that the funds will be used to procure essential laboratory equipment, which remains a critical need for the college. He commended AML for its consistent fulfillment of MDA obligations and its ongoing support for technical education in Liberia.
The roots of Nimba University’s Mining and Geology programs trace back to the 2005 Mineral Development Agreement between AML and the Liberian government.
Originally a satellite program under the University of Liberia’s Department of Geology and Mining, the initiative gained momentum in 2011 when AML provided an initial grant of US$200,000 through the National Commission on Higher Education. That funding supported the acquisition of laboratory materials and instructional resources, laying the foundation for programmatic growth.
Since then, AML’s engagement has expanded beyond financial assistance. The company has supported the university through the provision of technical experts during its formative years and facilitated a key academic partnership in 2014 with the Ghana School of Mines, aimed at curriculum enhancement and faculty development.
That initiative was later curtailed due to the Ebola outbreak but reflected AML’s broader vision for institutional collaboration.
With the current contribution, ArcelorMittal Liberia’s total financial support to Nimba University now amounts to US$675,000, comprising both recurring annual contributions and arrears paid since 2012.
This sustained investment aligns with AML’s broader sustainability and social investment strategy, which emphasizes education, workforce readiness, and long-term economic empowerment.
The company continues to play a pivotal role in Liberia’s development, particularly in advancing technical education to build local capacity within the mining and natural resource sectors.
