The National Road Fund (NRF) has launched a major initiative aimed at enhancing road maintenance and community oversight across Liberia. As part of the rollout of the Community-Based Organization (CBO) Road Monitoring Program, the NRF has officially handed over a fleet of 28 motorbikes, a pickup truck, and essential computer and printing equipment to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The logistics package is designed to support the Ministry’s coordination of community-based road monitoring efforts, particularly in rural and underserved regions. The program seeks to ensure timely reporting and rapid response to maintenance issues affecting community and feeder roads.

Under the initiative, approximately 1,500 youth will be recruited and deployed as road monitors. These individuals will be responsible not only for identifying and reporting infrastructure challenges but also for conducting minor repairs such as drainage cleaning and roadside brushing—measures aimed at preserving road quality and improving safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

Speaking at the official handover ceremony, NRF Manager Joseta Neufville Wento
underscored the dual impact of the program.

“This initiative is a twofold approach—first, to improve the condition of our roads, especially in remote communities, and second, to provide employment opportunities for our young people,” Wentoe stated.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs will lead the implementation of the program in collaboration with local authorities and community organizations. Internal Affairs Minister welcomed the support, emphasizing that the provision of logistics will significantly enhance the Ministry’s operational capacity.

“The availability of these tools will enable us to work more effectively with community-based organizations to ensure proper oversight and timely maintenance,” the Minister said.

The Community Road Monitoring Program is expected to improve road durability and accessibility, particularly in rural areas where feeder roads are critical for the movement of goods, services, and people. By directly engaging communities and empowering youth, the initiative aligns with the Liberian government’s broader agenda of decentralization and inclusive development.
