Liberia is redoubling its effort to strengthen its healthcare system through expanded international cooperation, following a high-profile visit by President Joseph Boakai to Shonan Kamakura General Hospital in Kanagawa.

The visit, aimed at deepening health sector collaboration between Liberia and Japan, saw a warm reception for President Boakai and his delegation from the hospital’s management, the Executive Mansion said.

Executive Director Dr. Shuzo Kobayashi affirmed the institution’s ongoing commitment to global medical partnerships and to Liberia’s healthcare advancement.

Central to the discussions were plans to boost Liberia’s health system through knowledge exchange, enhanced medical training, and the introduction of modern treatment technologies.

President Boakai expressed deep gratitude for the hospital’s past support, notably its contributions to the dialysis center at Monrovia’s John F. Kennedy Medical Center, including dialysis machines that have saved lives and expanded critical care capacity in Liberia.

“The continuity of such initiatives is vital to the quality and accessibility of healthcare for Liberians,” President Boakai said, emphasizing his administration’s determination to foster an enabling environment for sustained health partnerships.

He reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to building on the gains achieved with Shonan Kamakura General Hospital.

Dr. Kobayashi outlined concrete areas for ongoing collaboration, including telemedicine, specialized treatments, staff training, and knowledge transfer, with a focus on the long-term sustainability of medical interventions in Liberia.

“The hospital is prepared to continue working with Liberia in these key areas,” Dr. Kobayashi stated, underscoring the mutual benefits of sustained cooperation.

For President Boakai, the visit marks a renewed chapter in Liberia–Japan health cooperation. He said partnerships with world-class institutions are essential to his administration’s vision of a healthier, more resilient Liberia.
