Government of Liberia has commissioned five newly constructed modern markets across Nimba County, delivering a significant boost to rural commerce and agricultural transformation.

The facilities, located in Saclepea, Flumpa, Tappita, Karnwee, and Ganta, were unveiled by Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah under the Rural Economic Transformation Project (RETRAP), funded by the World Bank at a cost of more than US$950,000.

Each market is equipped with a warehouse, gender-separated flush toilets, and solar-powered lighting—amenities designed to improve hygiene, safety, and extend trading hours. For thousands of rural families who rely on local trade, the markets represent renewed hope and opportunity.

At the commissioning ceremony in Saclepea, Minister Nuetah praised the World Bank’s partnership in strengthening Liberia’s agricultural sector.

“On behalf of the Government of Liberia and the Ministry of Agriculture, we extend our sincere thanks to the World Bank for ensuring the successful completion of the RETRAP project,” he said, describing the markets as evidence that development is reaching Liberia’s rural heartlands.

Nuetah also commended local authorities and residents for their cooperation during construction, urging traders to take ownership of the facilities.

“These buildings now belong to you. Their care, security, and proper use will determine how long they serve future generations,” he stressed.

For rural traders—many of whom previously operated in makeshift stalls or under open skies—the new markets promise dignity, safety, and improved income opportunities. The initiative aligns with government efforts to expand market access, strengthen value chains, and stimulate local trade.

Winifred Goah, National Chairperson of the Liberia Marketing Association (Nimba Chapter), hailed the development:

“Farmers now have a place to bring their produce, and marketers have shelters where they can do business without fear of rain or harsh sunshine.”

The ceremony was marked by songs of joy from women traders in Karnwee, reflecting the excitement across the county.

The commissioning of the five markets is seen as a landmark achievement in Liberia’s rural development drive. With RETRAP setting the pace, the Ministry of Agriculture has pledged further investments to transform agriculture, empower rural entrepreneurs, and build resilient local economies.
