India’s Union Women and Child Development Minister Annpurna Devi on Tuesday met a parliamentary delegation from Liberia and discussed Asian nation’s initiatives on women-led development, political representation and gender-responsive governance.
The Liberian delegation, comprising members of the Senate, House of Representatives and the Women’s Legislative Caucus, was led by Ellen-Attoh Wreh. Representatives of UN Women also participated in the meeting held in New Delhi.
The delegation is visiting India from August 10 to 15 as part of a South-South Peer Learning Mission organised with the support of UN Women. The programme is funded by the Governments of India, Brazil and South Africa through the India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA) Fund and administered by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation.
During the meeting, the Indian side briefed the Liberian delegation on key initiatives aimed at advancing women-led development.
Annpurna Devi highlighted India’s approach of recognising women as active participants and leaders in national development. She outlined the country’s legislative, institutional and programme-based measures aimed at strengthening women’s empowerment.
Discussions covered a range of areas, including women’s political representation, gender-responsive governance and budgeting, institutional mechanisms to address violence against women, the care economy and women’s leadership in local governance.
The two sides exchanged views on areas of mutual interest and expressed their commitment to strengthening cooperation between India and Liberia under the broader framework of South-South cooperation.
