The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has received 15 new Honda motorcycles from the Government o in a move aimed at strengthening environmental monitoring, improving field inspections, and enhancing the country’s capacity to respond to public health emergencies.
The motorcycles were officially presented on October 14, 2026, through the government’s Health Security Project, a multi-sector initiative jointly implemented by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the EPA under the One Health approach, which promotes collaboration between human, animal, and environmental health sectors.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony, EPA Department of Environmental Research and Radiation Safety Director and project focal point, Rafael Ngumbu, said the vehicles would significantly improve the mobility of environmental inspectors, particularly in remote counties where transportation challenges often hinder effective monitoring and enforcement activities.
According to Mr. Ngumbu, environmental protection remains a critical component of safeguarding both human and animal health. He noted that the motorcycles will enable inspectors to conduct timely field assessments and strengthen environmental surveillance nationwide.
Beyond the motorcycles, he disclosed that the Health Security Project is also supporting the EPA with 15 laptops, laboratory equipment valued at approximately US$200,000, and postgraduate scholarship opportunities aimed at enhancing the agency’s technical and professional capacity.
Receiving the motorcycles on behalf of the EPA, Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo expressed appreciation to the Government of Liberia for the support, stressing that reliable transportation is essential for environmental officers tasked with conducting inspections and responding to environmental threats across the country.
Dr. Yarkpawolo said the motorcycles were specifically selected to meet the challenges of Liberia’s rough terrain and demanding field conditions, ensuring greater effectiveness in environmental monitoring operations.
Also speaking at the event, Representative Jeremiah Garwo Sokan Sr., Chairman of the House Committee on Lands, Mines, Energy, Natural Resources and Environment, welcomed the donation and called on the EPA to ensure the motorcycles are responsibly managed and properly maintained.
The newly acquired motorcycles are expected to enhance the EPA’s operational reach, strengthen environmental oversight, and improve the agency’s ability to monitor environmental risks and protect public health across Liberia.
