This statement is issued on behalf of the people of Liberia to respectfully call upon the Government of the United States of America, through its Embassy in Liberia, to support and encourage a peaceful diplomatic resolution of the ongoing border situation between the Republic of Liberia and the Republic of Guinea.
The people of Liberia remain deeply concerned about the situation unfolding along the Liberia–Guinea border and the potential for escalation if the matter is not handled with urgency, diplomacy, and transparency. Liberia is a country whose citizens have endured the devastating consequences of civil conflict, and as such, Liberians are profoundly weary of anything that has the potential to threaten peace and stability. The preservation of peace is not only a political priority for Liberians, but a national necessity rooted in our history and collective experience.
This concern is further heightened by the current security climate in West Africa and the Sahel, where several countries have experienced political instability, coups, military takeovers, and the spread of extremism, often fueled by border tensions, weak state presence in remote regions, and economic hardship.
The people of Liberia fear that any unwanted escalation of the current border situation, if not managed carefully and diplomatically, could create conditions that risk destabilizing the country, undermining its democratic progress, and creating vulnerabilities that bad actors could exploit. Liberians do not want their country or the Mano River region to become another example of preventable instability.
Liberia is also currently facing serious economic and social challenges. Rising hardship limited economic opportunities, and social pressure on ordinary citizens make the preservation of peace and stability even more critical. History shows that when economic strain and political or security tensions occur simultaneously, the risk of instability increases significantly. Preventing escalation is therefore not only a security matter, but also an economic and social priority.
There are well-known historical precedents where the United States, ECOWAS, and other international partners played important diplomatic roles in helping to reduce tensions, support dialogue, and encourage peaceful resolutions to conflicts in the Mano River region and West Africa.
These diplomatic efforts contributed to peace processes, stabilization, and democratic transitions in countries that were once affected by conflict. These examples demonstrate that timely diplomatic engagement can prevent disputes from escalating and can help maintain regional stability.
In this context, the people of Liberia respectfully request the Government of the United States, through its Embassy in Monrovia, alongside key international partners—including France, given its influence in the region, the European Union, the African Union, and ECOWAS—to leverage their diplomatic channels and good offices to encourage restraint, constructive dialogue, transparency, and cooperative engagement between the Governments of Liberia and Guinea.
This appeal is made solely in support of peaceful diplomatic efforts and, if necessary, mediation, and should not be construed as a request for any military intervention.
We further call on all parties involved to prioritize transparency, confidence-building measures, and regular communication with the public in order to reduce fear, prevent misinformation, and maintain public trust and national calm.
The people of Liberia desire peace, stability, and continued democratic progress. We believe that through responsible leadership, diplomatic engagement, and goodwill from all sides, the current border situation can be resolved peacefully and in a manner that strengthens regional cooperation rather than undermines it.
The preservation of peace, democracy, and stability must remain the highest priority for Liberia, Guinea, and the entire West African region.
