ArcelorMittal Liberia announced an investment of over $58,000 in the latest phase of its Biodiversity and Conservation Program. This initiative directly impacts nine communities and over 60 local stakeholders in the Yarmein belt, Nimba County.

The program, implemented in collaboration with Humanity Care Liberia, targets sustainable agricultural practices, including vegetable farming, piggery, poultry, and swamp rice production. The initiative aims not only to empower local farmers but also to alleviate pressure on Liberia’s valuable forestland.

At the launch event held in Baapa, community leaders and representatives from ArcelorMittal Liberia underscored the program’s dual focus on enhancing livelihoods while safeguarding biodiversity in the region.

“This program is not about AML profiting—it is about empowering farmers,” stated Samuel Peter, ArcelorMittal Liberia’s Superintendent for Biodiversity and Conservation. “Our goal is to provide the necessary resources to help these communities thrive while also preserving the environment.”

The funding will provide essential support for local farmers by supplying tools, seeds, and food assistance. Importantly, 100% of the harvests and income generated through this program will remain with the local participants, ensuring that the economic benefits of these initiatives are felt directly within the community.

A special acknowledgment was given to the community relations team and local leaders, including Marie Torlo of the Yekepa Vegetable Gardeners, whose efforts exemplified the power of partnership in driving meaningful change.
