Outgoing President George Weah remains the leader of the Coalition for Democratic Change as the country’s largest grass root political party goes back into opposition.
CDC national Chairman Mulbah Morlu said reports of internal rift and secret meeting targeting Weah’s role in the organization are groundless.
The CDC remains absolutely united around the leadership of its Standard-bearer, His Excellency George M. Weah, Morlu said in a statement posted on his official Facebook account.
“Our opponents are so afraid of the might and muscles of a united CDC that they’re trying so hard to create a false crisis in the CDC.
“The CDC does not need a secret meeting to discuss or divulge a position on recent election issues.
“Those pushing this lie may not be aware that our official position as a party was clearly and publicly communicated recently, which unites the CDC solidly behind President Weah, while cautioning the incoming government against witch-hunt, bad governance, etc.”
Founded in 2005, the Congress for Democratic Change won its first presidential election in 2017, governing the West African nation for a six-year period, which ends in Jan. 2024.
Weah and the CDC were defeated this year in the country’s tightest presidential race in nearly two decades, setting up the second democratic transition in almost 70 years.
CDC in Opposition
Their return to the opposition sphere in just six years coupled with reports that hardliners within the CDC are unhappy with the speed at which Weah admitted defeat to his opponent is generating speculation the party could be on the heels of crisis.
“Here’s the bad news for the repackaged newcomers,” Morlu said referring to the Unity Party return to state power
“The CDC was completely united throughout its campaigns, remained united in respecting the outcome of the half-district election mandate given JNB [Joseph Boakai] and will equally remain robust, Proactive and institutionally united in the coming months and years so as to objectively engage & confront when necessary the ‘Old wine’ disguised in new bottles.
I’m glad that 99% of our people are unquestionably united behind the Standard-bearer and the mighty party as we move forward, together.
“So these ‘Half-district mandate bearers’ need to stop creating false cracks in the CDC.
“We are not a bunch of angry people, but a tolerant well-organized and patriotic sons, daughters, mothers and fathers who love this country and have sacrificed our all for it.”
