Liberia: ‘General’ Power Rehabilitating Drugs’ Users

Must read

By E. J. Nathaniel Daygbor

Former General Augustine Nagbe, also known as General Power, has transformed himself from a dreadful general to a rehabilitator of drug users in Liberia. He now runs a rehabilitation center called Star Based on Bushrod Island, which provides support and treatment for young people who are victims of narcotic substances. The center also accommodates veterans of the Armed Forces of Liberia.

General Power’s motivation to open the center stems from his desire to give back to society and help the future leaders of Liberia. The program at the center lasts for eight months and includes counseling, medication, feeding, and skills training.

General Power has managed to sustain the center through his own contributions and donations from parents and others in the community, as well as some retired soldiers. However, he is calling on President Joseph Boakai, NGOs, and the international community for financial assistance.

In terms of discipline, General Power emphasizes counseling and talking to the patients rather than resorting to physical punishment.

He believes in the power of African cultural traditions and recalls his own experience of being disciplined by his mother. The goal of the center is to help children overcome their addiction to drugs and reintegrate them into society.

General Power’s program has already graduated 40 individuals, with only four having returned to drug use.

He credits Captain Charles Jlateh, another retired army officer, for handling the counseling aspect of the program. Some of the patients at the center have parents in the United States, and it is possible that they may be taken back to their families after completing the rehabilitation process.

Two female patients, Theresa Wah and Kulah Massalley, shared their stories of how drugs had negatively impacted their lives. However, since entering the rehabilitation center, they have been able to overcome their addiction and are now focused on building a better future for themselves.

Overall, General Power’s transformation from a dreadful general to a rehabilitator demonstrates his commitment to helping young people in Liberia break free from the cycle of drug addiction and regain control of their lives.

He hopes that with support from the government, NGOs, and the international community, he can continue to provide this much-needed service to the youth of Liberia.
