In a scathing statement, the secretary-general of Liberia’s main opposition party, the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), has announced an emergency meeting of the party’s legislative caucus in response to the “arbitrary actions” and “wanton disregard for the ruling of the Supreme Court” by President Joseph Boakai.
The meeting, to be held on Monday, April 29, 2024, at the party’s headquarters, will be attended by former President George Weah, the party’s standard-bearer, as the CDC seeks to “restore dignity to our political corridor against the ongoing gross incompetence and abuse of power” by the current administration.
In the statement, Jefferson Koijee, the CDC secretary-general, accused Boakai of engaging in “kangaroo style and gangsterism” that will be met with “a robust, political, constitutional and decisive resistance” from the opposition party.
“Mr. Boakai has an obligation to govern this country peacefully, but on the contrary, he’s indulged in a kangaroo style and gangsterism that will be met with a robust, political, constitutional and decisive resistance,” Koijee said.
The CDC accused the of mismanagement and a disregard for the rule of law. The party’s allegations of “arbitrary actions” and “wanton disregard for the ruling of the Supreme Court” suggest a climate of political crisis in the country.
Koijee further called on “all tenured holders including Justices to remain calm as this country is governed by law and will be protected against any speedy retrogression by Mr. Boakai and his gang of desperadoes.”
