As fire disasters continue to devastate communities in and around Monrovia, non-political advocacy and civil society organization STAND has issued a statement expressing deep sadness over the loss of lives and properties. In response to this ongoing crisis, STAND has reached out to major donor partners to secure support for the Liberia National Fire Service Agency.
Despite collaborative efforts between the government of Liberia and these partners to address the fire disaster challenge, thousands of victims remain homeless with no clothing, food, or financial means to rebuild their lives. In light of this, STAND is calling on the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) or the government of Liberia to provide compensation to those affected.
Many recent fire incidents can be traced back to energy or electrical problems associated with the LEC, either directly or indirectly, the group observes.
STAND believes that the LEC or the government should take responsibility for this national issue and begin compensating victims who have suffered from deprivation, homelessness, and neglect.
Furthermore, fair compensation should also be extended to the families of those who tragically lost their lives.
To facilitate this relief effort, STAND is proposing the establishment of a Fire Disaster Relief Fund. The fund would be utilized to directly assist fire victims, covering crucial expenses such as housing, medical bills, food, clothing, and more.
STAND, also known as Solidarity and Trust for a New Day, reiterates its commitment to being the voice of the voiceless and seeks to provide vital support to those affected by fire disasters and unfair labor practices.
