Liberia: Gains of the House in less than Seven Months: An irreversible Path

Must read

The National Legislature is the 1st Branch of Liberia. Her function is to make laws, demonstrate oversight, and ensure District and County Representation in government. In other words, those who occupy this office are referred to as the people’s deputies. This branch is a national theatre for leaders where priorities are competed.

In Liberia, we call it the National Legislature, in the United States of America, they refer to it as the Congress and in other parts of the world, it is called Parliament. Whichever name it is called based on your location, our national Legislature is named by number.

Ours is given an assigned number every six years or whatever tenure or after every presidential, Legislative, and general election.

Therefore, from the time we were founded as a nation-state, named and styled Liberia, the Legislature we have now is the 55th National Legislature, excluding various interim governments during our civil war years. But that is not the crux of this article.  ‘

Instead, the central idea of this article is to make our people know that the gains the Legislature has made in the short period under the leadership of Hon. Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa is admirable and indelible.

I will begin to name some of the gains the 55th Legislature has made in just a short wild after the 2023 Legislative and Presidential election. These are the gains made in less than seven months under Hon. Cllr Koffa.

1. Retirement of aging and long-term employees of the House of Representatives ( in process).

2. Restructuring of the Central Administration workforce in keeping with employees’ academic credentials and discipline.  Thereby putting square pairs in square holes, and not square pair in round holes.

3. Auditing the financial and administrative records of the House of Representatives, which is the first of its kind since this Branch of government was created.

4. Under Cllr. Koffa, Liberia signed the War and Economic Crime Court of Liberia.

5. Under Cllr. Koffa, Lawmakers have declared their assets, something which has never happened in the history of contemporary Liberian politics.

6. Under Cllr. Koffa, there is a complete salary and other benefits readjustment for employees of the House of Representatives on an equilibrium basis. In this age and time of our society, these gains are irreversible, and we are going to ensure these gains serve as a new model for government Ministries and Agencies.

The vision of Cllr. Koffa is to ensure that employees rise above the poverty line by earning them a better wage. This has started with the House of Representatives, sooner, you will see the seed of progressivism expanding in the larger society.
