Student Union Hails Appointment of Lawyer Massaquoi as Executive Director of War and Economic Crimes Court
The Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) of the University of Liberia has welcomed the appointment of renowned lawyer Cllr. Johanthan Massaquoi as the Executive Director of the newly established Office of War and Economic Crimes Court.
In a campus release dated July 7, 2024, SUP described Cllr. Massaquoi as an “astute, discipline and renowned massescratic lawyer” who meets the “fullest standards” and has the “moral and legal requirements” to serve in this crucial position.
SUP, which has been at the forefront of the campaign for the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court, believes that Cllr. Massaquoi’s “longstanding records of legal investigation, honesty and integrity” make him the perfect candidate to deliver on this important task.
As part of his responsibilities, Cllr. Massaquoi has been charged with the duty to rally support, gain the needed international attention, and create a roadmap for the successful establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court.
The leading student political movement in the country has called on all human rights advocates, civil society groups, youth and student organizations, and other war and economic crimes court advocates to rally behind Cllr. Massaquoi and ensure that the court is fully established and serves its rightful purpose.
The party cautioned that many of those who perpetrated atrocities during the civil war are still powerful in Liberia and have significant resources to challenge efforts to bring them to justice. However, the SUP stressed that as human rights defenders, they must stand firm and ensure that justice is served for the victims of the war and economic crimes.
SUP has mandated all its militants, cadres, and student leaders in Liberia to join hands and begin immediate sensitization on the efforts to ensure the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court in the country.
