Liberia: Massaquoi Briefs UN About Progress on War Crimes Court

Liberia officials  including key figures from the War and Economic Crimes Court, have been at the United Nations Headquarters in New York attending  the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), which  focused on Sustainable Development Goal 16, which emphasizes peace, justice, and strong institutions.

During their visit, the delegation engaged in significant discussions with the United States Department of Justice, led by Rachel Rossi, Director of the Office for Access to Justice. They also met with representatives from the Global Justice Center and the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Legal Affairs, Stephen Mathias.

Addressing  the HLPF, Cllr. Jonathan T. Massaquoi presented on the role of the War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia’s efforts to comply with SDG 16. He highlighted the country’s strides and challenges in upholding justice and accountability through this court.

The delegation also attended a prestigious lunch reception hosted by Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the United States Representative to the United Nations, providing an invaluable networking opportunity to discuss further cooperation and support for Liberia’s justice initiatives.

This visit marks a significant step in Liberia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its judicial system and uphold the rule of law, aligning with the global objectives set out in SDG 16.

The distinguished delegation included Deputy Minister Cllr. Charles D. F. Karmo II, Cllr. Jonathan T. Massaquoi, the Executive Director of the War and Economic Crimes Court, and Atty. Lois Nimley (Nyenpan) Wisner, Legal Expert at the United Nations. =
