Following a thorough investigation into the recent earth vibrations affecting the Foya District in Lofa County, authorities have issued a warning about the increased risk of landslides in the region.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the National Disaster Management Agency, conducted an assessment from August 14 to 17, 2024, after a series of seismic activities began on July 26 and intensified in early August.
The investigation revealed that the steep terrain and deforestation in Yegbedu Town have significantly increased the area’s susceptibility to landslides, soil erosion, and other ground movements.
While no immediate catastrophic damage has been reported, the ongoing vibrations have caused significant fear among the town’s residents, leading to the displacement of approximately 70% of the 2,500 inhabitants.
According to the Head of the EPA, Mr. Emmanuel Urey Yarkpawolo, the investigative team has recommended the relocation of Yegbedu Town to a safer area as a crucial measure to prevent potential future disasters.
The recommendation comes in response to the identified instability of the region’s slopes, which poses a long-term risk to the community.
The EPA has also called for further geological studies to monitor and map fault lines, which is essential for predicting and mitigating future seismic events in Yegbedu and other vulnerable regions.
Enhanced community preparedness, including additional training for local emergency responders and the establishment of clear communication protocols among relevant agencies, is also recommended to improve safety and ensure a swift response in emergencies.
“The safety and well-being of the Yegbedu community are our top priorities,” said Mr. Yarkpawolo. “We are committed to working closely with the local authorities and residents to ensure a smooth relocation process and to strengthen the overall disaster preparedness in the region.”
The EPA’s recommendations will now be presented to the relevant government agencies and the Yegbedu community for further consideration and action, as authorities continue to monitor the situation and take necessary measures to protect the residents of Foya District.
