Liberia: Speaker Koffa Urges Grand Kru Students to Pursue Excellence, Serve as Mentors

Must read

House Speaker Fonati Koffa has urged students hailing from his native Grand Kru County to remain focused in their academic pursuits and to serve as mentors for their peers.

Addressing the induction ceremony of the newly elected leadership of the Grand Kru University Students Union (KUSU), Speaker Koffa said true leadership is not about personal gain, but rather about standing up for the interests of the community, village, and nation.

“Always seek the interest of your colleagues in your community, village in your county and on the national scene, they must be moved by your explanatory leadership role in the society,” Koffa said.

In a bid to inspire and guide the youth of Grand Kru County, the Speaker implored the new student leaders to serve as mentors for the young people of the county, helping them navigate the challenges they may face when dealing with the county’s Legislative Caucus and other issues.

The induction ceremony was a significant moment for the KUSU, as the student body had been plagued by internal crises for several years, rendering it dormant. However, the conflict was resolved through the intervention of the county’s legislative caucus.

The newly inducted KUSU leadership includes Christopher N. Menneh as President, Patrick N. Wreh as Vice President for Administration, Joseph Gelekan as Vice President for Operations, Victor D. Doe Jr. as Assistant Secretary, Matthew Gelekan as Treasurer, and Anthony Wleh as Chaplain.

In his remarks, Senator Numene T.H. Bartekwa challenged the new student leaders to serve as a bridge between the student community and the wider community, contributing to the forward progress of Grand Kru County.

Bartekwa highlighted the recent successes of the county, including the elections of former President George Weah in 2017, former Senate Pro-Tempera Albert T. Chie, and Speaker Koffa in 2024, as evidence of the county’s growing influence on the national stage.

The senator also praised the leadership of Speaker Koffa and the county’s Legislative Caucus for their efforts in resolving the internal crisis within the KUSU, paving the way for the new, dedicated leadership to take over.
