By Julius T. Jaesen, II

In an incredible display of sportsmanship and community spirit, the Super Barnersville Old timers Sports Association (Super Bosac) held a one-day in-house soccer match followed by a refreshing indoor celebration in honour of their long-standing member, Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan II.

The event took place at the Barnerville Estate Football Pitch, drawing football enthusiasts, government officials, local dignitaries, and community members in a show of appreciation for Minister Ngafuan’s immense commitment to the club and the country.

Minister Ngafuan, who has been an integral part of the Super Bosac Football Club, was recognised for his financial and moral support throughout his time in and out of Liberia.

His contributions, both on and off the field, have cemented his legacy within the club, making this celebration a fitting tribute to his service to both sports and the nation.

The football match, which ended in an exciting 2-2 draw between the Predators and the Mighty Hawks, was the highlight of the day. The honouree, Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan II, stole the show early on, scoring the first goal of the match with a spectacular left-foot strike.

Displaying remarkable skill and precision, Ngafuan dribbled past seven defenders, breezing into the eighteen-yard box before delivering a powerful shot into the net.

His deftness and power on the ball left spectators in awe, earning him the reputation of a prolific striker. The stadium echoed with cheers, with many praising his footwork as “a force to be reckoned with.”

“Ngafuan’s left foot is like dynamite!” one fan exclaimed. “He knows how to control the ball, take out defenders, and finish with style. No wonder he’s so respected on and off the pitch.”

The post-match celebration continued indoors, where club members and guests showered Minister Ngafuan with praise for his tireless support to the Barnersville Old-timers Sports Association.

Various speakers took turns acknowledging his loyalty to the team, even during his time abroad.

While serving as the African Development Bank Country Director in Uganda, Ngafuan continued to send financial support for every game played by the club.

His dedication, they said, was not linked to his recent appointment as Minister of Finance and Development Planning but stemmed from a lifelong bond with the club and its members.

Senator Jonathan Boycharles Sogbie, in his remarks, commended Barnersville Old timers Sports Association for their foresight in honouring a man who has served humanity with unparalleled devotion. He hailed Minister Ngafuan’s achievements and selflessness, noting that his contributions to the team and the country had been remarkable.

“Barnersville Old timers Sports Association made an excellent choice in honouring Minister Ngafuan,” said Senator Sogbie. “He’s a beacon of hope for many, and his service to this club and the nation at large speaks volumes.”

For his part, the head of the Assets and Property Recovery Taskforce, Cllr. Edwin Martin, followed with words of admiration, praising Minister Ngafuan for his exemplary leadership and inspiring contributions to Liberia. He called on the youth to stand with Minister Ngafuan as a symbol of inspiration for the next generation of Liberian leaders.

“Minister Ngafuan represents what our young people should aspire to be—selfless, dedicated, and supportive,” Cllr. Martin said. “Liberia’s development lies in our hands, and we must stand together as one, not divided. It is only by supporting one another that we can move this country forward.”

Representative Richard Nagbe Koon of electoral district number 11, whose district hosted the gathering, offered his congratulations as well. He expressed deep admiration for Minister Ngafuan’s decision to leave his prestigious position as Country Director of the African Development Bank in Uganda to return home and serve Liberia.

“It takes true patriotism to leave behind a lucrative salary and comfortable life to come back and sacrifice for your country,” Representative Koon noted. “Minister Ngafuan showed the true meaning of patriotism, and we are fortunate to have him back in service. His leadership will ensure that the Rescue Train led by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai gets back on track.”

Koon further emphasised that Ngafuan’s return was a strategic moment for Liberia’s development, expressing confidence that with his integrity and experience, he would succeed in his new role as Minister of Finance and Development Planning.

Accepting the honour, Minister Ngafuan expressed deep gratitude to the leadership of Barnersville Old timers Sports Association for recognising his contributions. He clarified that the event was not organised because of his recent appointment but was a celebration of brotherhood and camaraderie, which had defined his relationship with the club for many years.

“This event is not about my appointment as Minister; it’s about family and the bonds we’ve built over the years,” Ngafuan said. “Barnersville Old timers Sports Association has always been a part of me, and I owe much of what I’ve achieved to the members of this great team.”

Ngafuan further emphasised the importance of physical fitness, noting that regular participation in the club’s Sunday practices had helped him stay mentally and physically sharp.

“To have a sound mind for government work or any job, you need a healthy body,” Ngafuan added. “Playing football with this team keeps me fit and ready to face the challenges ahead.”

He concluded his remarks by acknowledging the enormous responsibility of serving as Liberia’s Minister of Finance and Development Planning. Although the task is daunting, he expressed confidence in his ability to succeed and do what is right for Liberia.

“The work ahead is challenging, but it’s not impossible. Doing the right thing for your country is always the best path, and I’m convinced we will succeed,” Ngafuan said to resounding applause.

The day ended with a strong sense of unity, as club members and attendees alike celebrated not just a football match but the enduring commitment of one of Liberia’s finest sons, whose dedication to service continues to inspire all.
