The Governments of Liberia and Rwanda Tuesday signed a wide-ranging General Cooperation Agreement, marking a significant step forward in bilateral relations between the two post-conflict African nations.

The agreement was signed by Olivier Jean Patrick Nduhungirehe, Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Ibrahim Nyei, Deputy Minister for International Cooperation and Economic Integration, representing Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti.

The signing ceremony followed months of consultations and exchanges between the two governments, reflecting a mutual desire to leverage their shared experiences in post-war state-building to advance common priorities, Nyei said on his official Facebook account.

Under the new agreement, Liberia and Rwanda have committed to collaborating in several key areas, including:

– Advocating for international peace and security

– Promoting sustainable development

– Cooperating in education, ICT and digitization, air transport, and avoidance of double taxation

– Addressing climate change and sustainable development

“This agreement represents an important milestone in the growing partnership between our two countries,” said Amb. Nduhungirehe. “By sharing our expertise and resources, Liberia and Rwanda can become even stronger champions for progress and prosperity in Africa.”

Deputy Minister Nyei echoed these sentiments, stating: “As nations that have overcome immense challenges, Liberia and Rwanda have a unique opportunity to model effective cooperation and drive transformative change. This agreement lays the foundation for that shared vision.”

The signing of the General Cooperation Agreement comes amidst a broader push by both countries to deepen regional integration and multilateral engagement. It is seen as a tangible demonstration of the strengthening of ties between Monrovia and Kigali.
