Egypt has been providing training to Liberia’s elite presidential guard unit, the Executive Protection Services (EPS).
The training, delivered by Egypt’s Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD), is aimed at bolstering the VIP protection capabilities of the EPS, which is responsible for safeguarding Liberia’s President and other high-level officials.
According to Liberian officials, the training has had a noticeable impact on the performance of EPS officers and guards, prompting requests for additional support from Egypt.
The Egyptian Ambassador to Liberia, Ahmed Abdel Azim, has emphasized Egypt’s commitment to contributing to “human capacity-building” in Liberia and preserving the security and stability of the Liberian people.
Liberia has made significant strides in rebuilding its institutions and strengthening its democracy since the end of the civil war
Relying on Egypt’s security expertise appears problematic in the context of protecting fundamental rights and freedoms.
Egypt’s security forces have a long and dark history of human rights violations. Under the authoritarian rule of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Egypt’s police and intelligence agencies have been accused of widespread torture, arbitrary detention, and extrajudicial killings of political dissidents and activists.
