Bea Mountain Mining Company (BMMC) has assured the Liberian government and Labor Minister Cllr. Cooper Kruah that it plans to employ more Liberians as the company expands its operations soon.
According to BMMC Operations Manager, Engin Turham, the company’s expansion will further contribute to the government’s economic stimulus program. Turham made the disclosure following a visit by Minister Kruah and a delegation to BMMC’s operations in the Western Region.
The minister’s visit was part of his nationwide assessment of the labor sector since assuming the position. The delegation also visited the Western Cluster company in Bomi County, where they held separate discussions with the management teams and workers to understand some of the problems.
During the visit to BMMC, Minister Kruah expressed concern over earlier media reports of a Turkish expatriate staff serving as a fuel pump attendant, a position that Liberians are capable of occupying.
However, the minister was informed that the issue had been resolved, with a Liberian now filling the position.
After meeting with the local workers, Minister Kruah urged BMMC’s management to address the concerns of the workers. In response, Turham lauded the minister’s visit and assured the Labor Ministry team of the company’s commitment to take remedial actions to address the workers’ concerns.
The minister emphasized the government’s full commitment to protecting the industrial environment and the need for the employment of more Liberian staff and their elevation to top managerial positions, in a bid to create economic stimulus for them.
The visit by the Labor Minister and his team is the first leg of a nationwide assessment of the labor sector, as the government continues to push for more local participation and job creation in the country’s economic activities.
