The Liberia Telecommunication Authority is working with Mobile Network Operator Orange to roll out advanced 5G service that would position Liberia as a leader in digital connectivity in Africa.
The revolutionary technology is expected to launch in early 2025, backing the nation’s efforts to modernize its $3 billion economy and drive digital innovation.
LTA Chairman Abdullah Kamara outlined the transformative potential of 5G, describing it as a milestone that will create avenues for new revenue and opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and individuals alike.
“This 5G is going to be really revolutionary because 5G is the bond of the internet,” he said in an exclusive interview with Oracle News Daily in the capital Monrovia.
Hong Kong and Shenzhen Stock Exchange listed company ZTE is providing the 5G equipment for Orange Liberia. ZTE’s core business is wireless, exchange, optical transmission, data telecommunications gear, telecommunications software, and mobile phones.
LTA chief Kamara has concluded a field assessment mission to China touring ZTE’s facilities to get the feel of the of the company’s capabilities and standard requirements for products. The technology comes equipped with evolved multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology, enhanced security protocols, and capabilities for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).
Key sectors are already expressing interest in utilizing the technology. ArcelorMittal has indicated its desire to monitor its production process through 5G, while entities like the the Forestry Development Authority can use the technology to track deforestation and biodiversity efforts.
As Liberia prepares to embrace this cutting-edge technology, there is optimism about the benefits it will bring, enabling everything from smart home devices to immersive augmented and virtual reality experiences.
“In the next five years, most of the devices at home will be connected to the internet,” Kamara noted, illustrating the extensive reach of 5G.
“We went to China to have a full understanding of the 5G Advanced technology services, aiming for high standards and consumer satisfaction.”
The introduction of the service could place Liberia at the forefront of telecommunications advancements in Africa.
