Liberia: Combating Digital Threats

Must read

The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has launched a comprehensive Cybersecurity Awareness Campaign aimed at educating citizens about the dangers of cyber scams and fraud. The initiative, which began in Montserrado County in October, recently gained momentum during an event in Ganta City, Nimba County.

The campaign is part of the LTA’s initiative to inform Liberians about the digital threats that compromise both individual and institutional security. President Joseph Boakai, who attended the initial launch in Montserrado, underscored the government’s commitment to bolstering cybersecurity across the nation.

Commissioner Angela Cassell Bush, head of the LTA’s Department of International Gateway Services, addressed the crowd from Cairo, Egypt, where she was a keynote speaker at the second OECD conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI). She highlighted the campaign’s importance in empowering citizens to protect themselves against cybercrimes.

“The goal of this campaign is to ensure that every Liberian, regardless of their background, understands the potential dangers lurking online and knows how to protect themselves from cyber scams and fraud,” stated Commissioner Bush.

The Ganta event featured a community engagement session that sought to involve diverse groups, including market women and motorcyclists. Participants received information on safeguarding personal data, identifying phishing attempts, and avoiding digital fraud.

In a hands-on approach, the LTA team distributed educational materials and practical advice to residents about navigating the digital landscape safely. Local schools, including United Liberia Inland Academy (ULICA), Geolanda Community School, JW Pearson High School, Mansiah Christian Academy, Christian Foundation High School, and Ganta YMCA High School, participated actively, focusing on raising awareness among youth regarding online safety.

Commissioner Bush revealed that the cybersecurity awareness campaign will expand to all 15 counties in Liberia in the coming months, with particular focus on schools, businesses, government entities, and ordinary citizens. “We are committed to reaching every corner of Liberia with this crucial message,” she concluded, emphasizing the campaign’s nationwide scope.
