The Supreme Court of Liberia has declared the recent actions by a faction within the House of Representatives aimed at removing Speaker J. Fonati Koffa as illegal.
The court’s decision, announced on Friday, confirmed Koffa’s position as the legitimate presiding officer of the House.
The ruling comes after a turbulent period characterized by constitutional disputes and allegations of overreach by the Majority Bloc, which sought to unseat Koffa and challenge the legitimacy of his leadership.
The court condemned the faction’s actions, stating they were not in line with the nation’s Constitution.
This opinion of the West African nation’s Apex Court, protects democracy, the rule of law and underscores the importance of constitutional governance in Liberia.
In a statement following the ruling, Speaker Koffa expressed gratitude and called for unity among lawmakers.
“We celebrate victory, not as a block, but as a democracy embedded in the rule of law,” he said.
Koffa urged his colleagues to resume legislative duties and collaborate on the pressing issues facing the nation. He also indicated plans for outreach to encourage participation in the House’s proceedings.
The Supreme Court also issued a recommendation for the legislature to consider enacting a law or reform addressing the requirements for obtaining a quorum when lawmakers are absent from sessions. This guidance aims to prevent future disruptions and ensure the smooth operation of legislative activities.
The court’s decision is expected to facilitate a resolution to the ongoing political impasse and restore normalcy in the House, enabling the passage of critical legislation for the benefit of the Liberian people.
