Liberia: LWSC Offers 50% Waiver for Delinquent Water Customers

Must read

The Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) has announced a temporary 50% waiver on outstanding water bills for customers with debts incurred up to December 31, 2023.

This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden faced by many households and businesses amid ongoing water supply challenges in Monrovia and various regions of the country, the company said.

Eligible customers must have outstanding balances of at least USD 100 or its equivalent in Liberian Dollars (LRD) to qualify for the waiver. To benefit from this program, customers are required to pay 50% of their total arrears in full. The waiver will be available for a period of three months, running from March 26 to June 26, 2025.

This decision by the LWSC’s Board of Directors comes at a crucial time when access to clean and reliable water remains a pressing issue in Liberia. Many residents in Monrovia face inconsistencies in water supply due to aging infrastructure, increasing demand, and challenges with water distribution.

The government and local authorities have been working on improving these systems, but significant gaps still exist.

The LWSC’s waiver program is inclusive of all water customers—households, businesses, and institutions—targeting a broad spectrum of society. The hope is that this initiative will encourage timely payments and help the LWSC recover some of their outstanding debts while promoting better water management practices among consumers, the management said.

“It is important to note that this waiver does not apply to bills accumulated in 2024, signaling that the utility is still focused on improving payment compliance moving forward as it addresses the ongoing supply issues.”
