A delegation from the United States Embassy, including Major Samuel Winsted, Marine Attaché, and Major Matthew Brown, Chief of the Office of Security Cooperation visited the Armed Forces of Liberia troops deployed for “Operation True Guardian” in Grand Cape Mount County on March 26, 2025.
Launched on March 24, “Operation True Guardian” is a military patrol initiative projected to take place quarterly across Liberia. The operation spans the Western Liberia region, covering Grand Cape Mount, Bomi, and Gbarpolu Counties, and is designed to enhance national security, build public trust, and ensure the safety and stability of Liberia’s borders and coastal areas.
The mission highlights the AFL’s commitment to safeguarding the nation by deterring transnational organized crime and maritime threats while also maintaining internal security.
It emphasizes the importance of cooperation between the military, local communities, and law enforcement agencies.
During the visit, Colonel Joseph Gayflor, Chief of Operations for the AFL, accompanied the US delegation in their tour of the operational grounds. Colonel Gayflor said the purpose of the delegation’s visit was to observe the ongoing activities of the operation and identify any challenges that the AFL faces, which may require support from the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) Security Force Assistance Brigade (SFAB).
During the visit to Bo Waterside, the team met with Randy Tweh, Commander, Liberia Immigration Service; Saliwo Paasewe, Youth Chairman, and Michael Samukai, NSA Commander.
Following the visit to BO Waterside, the Liberia Coast Guard conducted a riverine operation along the Tailor-Kru Town Coastline and Lake Piso in support of Operation True Guardian.
These riverine patrols will focus on strengthening maritime surveillance to deter illegal activities through proactive engagements with local communities and law enforcement agencies.
