Liberia: Minister Piah Backs Media Self-Regulation

Must read

Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism Jerolinmek Matthew Piah has issued clear policy statement regarding self-regulation within the independent press in Liberia.

In an address at the Presidential Media Dinner held in the Ministerial Complex’s ballroom, attended by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, government officials, and members of the Liberian media, Minister Piah affirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to press freedom while also calling for ethical responsibility among journalists.

“In a fragile democracy still healing from the wounds of conflict, freedom of the press comes with serious responsibilities,” Piah said.

He drew parallels between the media’s role and a beloved dish, Torborgee, reminding attendees that while it can be delightful, mishandling can lead to disastrous consequences. “Just as poorly prepared food can cause illness, unchecked media practices can threaten our national cohesion and peace,” he cautioned.

Highlighting the strides made under President Boakai’s administration since its beginning in January 2024, Piah noted that the government had lifted a three-year ban on the registration of new media institutions, resulting in the establishment of over 40 new outlets.

“No journalist will be censored… those dark days of government crackdowns on the media are behind us,” he asserted, reinforcing the administration’s dedication to upholding free speech.

Yet, the minister made it clear that with freedom comes the obligation to report responsibly. He urged the members of the press to engage in ethical self-regulation.

“While this government will continue to uphold the principles of free speech and press freedom, the responsibility for ethical self-regulation rests squarely with you—and with the Press Union of Liberia,” he stated, highlighting the essential partnership between the government and the media in fostering a robust democracy.
