In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing technological access across the nation, the Liberia Telecommunication Authority (LTA) has chosen Lofa County to host its ambitious Digital Village Project. This move, to be officially launched by President Joseph Boakai, marks a significant step toward bridging the digital divide in Liberia.
Abdullah Kamara, Chairman of the LTA Board of Commissioners, along with Prince Goah, Director of Administration, and other key staff members, recently visited Foya, Lofa County, to inspect the designated site for the project.
Their goal is to develop a modern, state-of-the-art technological hub, particularly aimed at empowering Liberia’s youth.
“During our visit to Foya, we had the opportunity to explore Foya Central High School—the future home of the ICT equipment donated by Huawei through the LTA. This Digital Village will serve as a cornerstone for technology in the area, promoting digital literacy and connectivity,” Kamara said.
“Once established, this hub will provide free internet access to students, local entrepreneurs, and community members for an entire year. Following this period, a nominal fee will be introduced to ensure the sustainability of the service.”
The concept of a Digital Village encompasses a broad range of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) resources, including hardware, software, and advanced networking solutions. This initiative aims to not only provide internet access but also to foster digital literacy and entrepreneurship in one of Liberia’s most underserved regions.
According to recent data, about 56% of Liberia’s population, or over 2.7 million people, live in rural areas, with many lacking reliable access to the internet or technology.
The establishment of the Digital Village has the potential to impact thousands of residents in Lofa County, providing them with opportunities for education, economic development, and enhanced communication.
With the implementation of the Digital Village, the LTA aims to transform Liberia into a fully connected nation, ensuring that no citizen is left behind in the digital age.
“Step by step, signal by signal, we’re committed to making this vision a reality, empowering every citizen to thrive in our increasingly digital world,” Kamara added.
