Press Union of Liberia: President Boakai, Senate House not to engage in any acts that would undermine the rule of law

The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) applauds the Supreme Court of Liberia for providing the necessary legal clarity on the case of constitutional violations by majority members of the House of Representatives regarding the controversy on the removal of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The PUL believes Wednesday’s ruling on the Amended Bill of Information filed by Speaker J. Fonati Koffa shows that the Supreme Court lived up to the expectations of the public by interpreting the rule of law without fear or favor, and in a clearer and easily understandable manner, void of legal jargons and ambiguity.

In light of the Court’s opinion and judgment, the PUL calls on all members of the House of Representatives to respect and adhere to the letter and spirit of the ruling.

In particular, members of the House of Representatives must now work to find a joint solution to the ugly situation of internal discord over the Speakership.

As a pro-democracy, social justice organization, the PUL encourages members of the House of Representatives to unite in the national interest as any continuation of the crisis would stall the forward development of Liberia, affecting the already struggling citizens.

If it is the will of the majority members to remove Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, it is important, as advised by ECOWAS Mediators, for the House members to follow the proper constitutional procedure.

On the other hand, if it remains the case that Speaker Koffa no longer enjoys the confidence of majority of his colleagues, it would be prudent he let go the position by honorably vacating the Speakership rather than staying on without numerical legitimacy for quorum.

Rather than continuing the politics of contention underpinned by tyrannical actions, the PUL calls on members of the House of Representatives to exercise the highest degree of consciousness by putting the national interest first and above partisan, parochial interest.

Finally, the PUL urges President Jospeh Nyuma Boakai and his executive–bureaucracy as well as the House of Senate not to engage in any acts that would undermine the rule of law in relation to doing official business with extra-legal actors operating a parallel leadership in the name of the House of Representatives void of the constitutionally–elected S

Former President George Weah’s Statement following the Supreme Court Ruling on the Urgent Need to Preserve Liberia’s Constitutional Democracy.

Fellow Liberians;

Today, the Supreme Court of Liberia issued a landmark opinion regarding the Bill of Information filed by the Honorable Speaker of the House of Representatives Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa and some members of the House. The Court decisively declared that the actions of the so-called majority-bloc in the House are unconstitutional and illegal. It reaffirmed that Speaker J. Fonati Koffa remains the legitimate and constitutional Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic.

This ruling is not merely a legal decision; it is a crucial affirmation of the rule of law and the constitutional order that underpins our democracy.

Let me be unequivocal; any attempt to undermine, ignore or dismiss this ruling threatens the very foundation of our nation. It risks plunging Liberia into a constitutional crisis—a crisis that our fragile peace, hard-won stability, and democratic progress can not withstand.

I call on President Joseph Boakai and his administration to respect this ruling and uphold constitutional order. Ignoring or rejecting the authority of our judiciary undermines the sovereignty of our Constitution and endangers our collective peace with dire consequences.

Additionally, I urge our international partners and all supporters of Liberia to encourage the Boakai administration to uphold the rule of law and comply with the Supreme Court’s decision. You are our allies, and your investments have been vital to Liberia’s stability and progress in democracy.

To the people of Liberia, I say this; our democracy is founded on justice, legality, and the rule of law. It is our shared duty to defend these principles with unwavering resolve. We must stand united and firm in support and protection of our constitution, regardless of political pressures or challenges. Our future depends on our collective commitment to uphold these sacred values.

Liberia’s strength lies in our adherence to justice and our respect for the rule of law. As we face this critical moment, let us reaffirm our dedication to building a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Liberia—one that remains a beacon of democracy and hope in the region.

May God continue to bless Liberia and guide us all in this crucial time.

H.E. Dr. George Manneh Weah Sr.

Former President of the Republic of Liberia

STAND URGES LEGISLATURE TO COMPLY WITH COURT DECISION AFFIRMING KOFFA’S LEGITIMACY; WARNS OF RELENTLESS CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE IF DEFIANCE PERSISTS

The Solidarity & Trust for a New Day (STAND), a frontline voice in Liberia’s civil society and a principal convener of the July 17th “WE THE PEOPLE” Protest, celebrates today’s Supreme Court ruling on the ‘Bill of Information’ as a powerful reaffirmation of constitutional supremacy and a decisive win for the rule of law in Liberia.

STAND therefore demands that the House of Representatives immediately honor and implement the Supreme Court’s ruling—an obligation that transcends politics and speaks to the core of national responsibility. Failure to do so will only deepen the wounds inflicted on Liberia’s fragile democracy by reckless power plays and factional arrogance.

STAND further issues a stern warning to the National Legislature: end the lawless defiance, respect the authority of the Court, and restore integrity to the people’s House.

At the same time, STAND warns President Joseph Boakai to immediately withdraw all forms of support (overt or covert) for the so-called majority bloc’s illegitimate power grab, a reckless scheme that has paralyzed the Legislature and trampled on the foundational principles of democracy.

STAND calls on the President to rise above partisan interests and exercise true statesmanship by reigning in his allies, ending the manufactured chaos, and shifting focus back to governance—especially the urgent, everyday struggles of the Liberian people who are crushed under the weight of poverty and economic hardship.

The organization expresses profound outrage at the legislature’s unending, self-centered power tussle, which drags on even as citizens face escalating hardship and national despair.

In alliance with ‘WE THE PEOPLE’ Protest Movement, STAND delivers this final and unequivocal warning: Any continued defiance of the Supreme Court’s ruling will trigger a nonviolent public action (sustained and unrelenting) until justice is upheld and the rule of law is fully restored.

In the spirit of peaceful resistance and democratic renewal, STAND thanks the thousands of citizens who recently showed their support at its press conference and reaffirmed their readiness to stand up for a new Liberia.

In the coming days, STAND is launching a strategic community-by-community mobilization effort, including county-wide engagement, mass awareness, and outreach. Thousands of protest T-shirts are now being printed in preparation for JULY 17th: THE DAY OF THE PEOPLE.

CDC Statement on the Supreme Court’s Ruling: A Triumph for Democracy, a Warning to Tyranny

The National Executive Committee of the mighty Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) hails the landmark ruling of the Honourable Supreme Court of the Republic of Liberia as a resounding victory for the people, for the Constitution, and for Liberia’s fragile democracy, which continues to come under assault by those driven by greed, ego, and blind political ambition.

This ruling—rendered in response to the Bill of Information filed by the legitimate Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa—serves as a deafening rejection of the coordinated, illegal attempt by a desperate minority, aided by state actors, to usurp legislative authority and plunge the nation into constitutional crisis. From the very beginning, the CDC stood firm and unshaken in its position that the illegal removal of Speaker Koffa was nothing short of a constitutional coup.

Today, the highest court in the land has spoken—and its voice is clear: the law is supreme, and no man is above it. Let this ruling serve as a mortal blow to those who have sought to undermine our democratic order through brute state power and unlawful manipulation. Let it be known that the CDC is no bystander in the face of tyranny.

We are the vanguard of the people’s resistance, and we will never retreat in the defence of the Republic. We commend Speaker Fonati Koffa for his boldness, consistency, and deep loyalty to the rule of law. His unwavering stand is a testament to the spirit of a new Liberia— a Liberia where the people, not political conspirators, determine the direction of the state.

In this historic moment, we must not forget the enduring example of Amb. George Manneh Weah, former President of the Republic and the undisputed paragon of peace, unity, and democracy. Even in the face of betrayal and provocation, President Weah chose country over chaos, stability over strife.

His legacy stands in direct contrast to the reckless and divisive governance of President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, who’s so-called “rescue mission” has become nothing but a risky mission— a desperate agenda marked by tribalism, economic mismanagement, and a growing hunger to centralize power at any cost.

We say this clearly and without fear: Mr. Boakai must desist immediately from the ongoing dismantling of Liberia’s democratic gains. His administration’s assault on constitutional order is a dangerous provocation—a recipe for national chaos that could return Liberia to the darkest chapters of its history.

The CDC will not sit idly by as our nation teeters on the edge. We therefore call on Speaker Koffa to lead with revolutionary grace and statesmanship, recognizing that this victory belongs not only to him or the CDC, but to every Liberian who believes in the rule of law.

We urge him to break the artificial chains of so-called majority and minority blocs and unite the House around a shared vision of justice, inclusion, and accountability. As always, the CDC remains the pillar of hope for the Liberian masses.

We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to democracy, peace, and justice—but let it be known that we are ever ready to resist tyranny in all its forms. The people’s voice will not be silenced, and our revolution for a better Liberia marches on.

Signed: Atty. Janga A. Kowo NATIONAL CHAIRMAN Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC)
