A fire broke out early Wednesday morning in the generator room serving the Liberia Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA) and two other entities, forcing a temporary suspension of operations at the key public health agency.
The blaze, which erupted before dawn, also affected the Liberia National Lottery and the Pharmacy Board, as the organizations share interconnected systems. Authorities say the Liberia National Fire Service responded swiftly to contain the fire, successfully preventing severe damage to the main LMHRA building and neighboring offices.
There were no injuries or casualties reported. Emergency teams quickly secured the area and ensured the safety of all staff and personnel involved.
In the aftermath, the generator room remains off-limits as a safety measure while a joint investigation is launched into the cause of the incident. Officials from LMHRA, the National Lottery, the Pharmacy Board, the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), and the Fire Service are working together to determine the cause of the explosion and assess existing safety procedures.
To minimize disruption, LMHRA has asked its employees to work from home for the next two days as repairs are made and power is restored. The agency has assured the public that core services will continue, albeit with a reduced on-site staff, to maintain oversight of medicines and health products in Liberia.
“Essential services will continue despite this setback,” LMHRA said in a statement, urging the public to adhere to fire safety guidelines and remaining vigilant.
Authorities pledged to update the public as the investigation progresses and promised to reinforce safety standards to prevent similar incidents in the future.
