Daughter of Ex-Liberian Dictator Samuel Doe Accuses George Weah of Hypocrisy After Tribute to Late First Lady

Veronica Mamie Doe, the daughter of former Liberian dictator Samuel Doe, has publicly accused former President George Weah of hypocrisy following his tribute to her late mother, Nancy B. Doe, who passed away on May 22, 2025.

Weah expressed his sorrow over the former First Lady’s death, but Mamie Doe claims it is disingenuous given the treatment her mother received during Weah’s presidency from 2018 to 2024.

In a scathing open letter addressed to Weah, Mamie Doe recounted how her mother was subjected to “hostility” during their only meeting in 2020.

She detailed how her mother had waited for over eight hours to meet with Weah, only to be met with public humiliation and disdain.

“You made her wait for you for over 8 hours then publicly blamed her for both of your presidential defeats,” Mamie Doe wrote. She recalled that during this meeting, her mother pleaded for mercy on behalf of her son, who had worked for the ruling party.

Mamie Doe further criticized Weah’s handling of her mother’s requests for recognition of her decade-long service as First Lady, saying that despite her perseverance in reaching out to him, she was continually turned away.

“She stood at the gates of the Executive Mansion, only to be turned away, time and time again,” she lamented.

In his statement of condolence, Weah praised Nancy Doe for her charitable work and contributions to women’s advocacy in Liberia, acknowledging her significant role during her husband’s regime.

However, Mamie Doe’s sharp response questioned the sincerity of Weah’s sentiments, suggesting that they were more about political optics than genuine remorse.

“It seems someone else must have drafted your letter, for it is hard to believe the man who silenced her cries for help for justice now mourns her absence,” she stated.

Weah has yet to respond to these allegations. Mamie Doe also noted her frustration at social media platforms, revealing that Facebook had removed her post regarding Weah’s tribute twice, prompting her to raise concerns about censorship.
